More HIV/Aids Treatment Sites for Mpumalanga
More people living with HIV and AIDS will now have access to medication in Mpumalanga after the provincial government increased the number of sites that will offer antiretroviral treatment.

The number of sites providing anti-retroviral treatment in the province in line with the national government's comprehensive plan tackling HIV and AIDS has been increased from six to eight.

But the provincial government's plan is to have 12 HIV and AIDS treatment sites in various parts of Mpumalanga before the end of this financial year, that is between now and April next year.

Witbank and Shongwe hospitals were the first to start with the programme in June this year and they were followed by Philadelphia, Evander, Themba and Embhuleni in August.

The National Department of Health has now accredited Rob Ferreira Hospital in Nelspruit and Bethal Hospital to begin with the comprehensive plan and the two hospitals will start with the programme on December 1 this year to mark the World AIDS Day.

Hospitals such as Piet Retief, KwaMhlanga, Mametlhake and Tonga will start with the rollout plan before the end of this financial year and that would mean all identified sites are operational.

The Media Liaison Officer in the Premier's Office, George Mohlamonyane, said the provincial government wanted to live up to the benchmarks set by President Thabo Mbeki and Minister of Health Manto Tshabalala-Msimang to have all these sites operational before the end of the financial year.

He said already 1 700 people had been assessed for the antiretroviral therapy in the province and added that 249 females and 125 males and children were presently on the antiretroviral treatment.

"This is not a cure for HIV and AIDS but it requires one to adhere to a strict treatment routine that is prescribed by a doctor in order to live a healthier life," Mr Mohlamonyane said.
